The Yorkshire Tapestry Exhibition

The Yorkshire Tapestry is an exhibition of art work created by Yorkshire people, young and old, collectively and individually.

The idea for the exhibition began with Age Concern who started a national project called 'Debate Of The Age'. The project aims to raise issues which concern all of us in thinking and planning for the future and has identified five main themes.

In Yorkshire we invited contributions from anyone in the area with something to say. All the work submitted to us has been assembled to form a grand exhibition which opened in York and will tour the region in the year 2000. Examples of some of the works can be found in our gallery pages.

This site has further information about the Yorkshire Tapestry project, a copy of our information pack, and a map showing where things are happening. Please contact us if you need any advice or assistance.

Yorkshire Tapestry is a Debate Of The Age project co-ordinated by the Skippko Arts Team working in partnership with Age Concern in Yorkshire. The project is funded by Age Concern with financial contribution from Yorkshire Arts.

The Yorkshire Tapestry is on Tour

Since the initial grand opening of the exhibition in York the Yorkshire Tapestry exhibition has been seen at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds and at the National Conference for Debate of the Age at the Islington Business Design Centre, London.

The 2000 tour of the exhibition has been very successful so far, visiting Bradford, Hull, Pocklington, Wakefield and Settle. We hope to take the exhibition to Rotherham during October and the final venue will be at The Point in Doncaster from 7th - 20th Nov 2000.

As the exhibition has been touring workshops have taken place at the venues to enable more people to express their views about the Debate of the Age. New and exciting work has been created during these workshops which has been added to the exhibition to continue with the tour.

Please see 'Whats Happening' for further details of the tour.

Update of the Official Opening

The exhibition was officially opened by the Sherrif of York and everyone had the opportunity to meet contributors and organisers. Over 2000 people visited the exhibition and some of the comments were as follows:-

'Though not yet 50 (nearly!) this has inspired me. My own ageism resisted me coming but I'm glad I stood against it.'

'This is the 2nd time I have visited this splendid exhibition'

'Very imaginative and thought provoking'

'Gave us a lot to think about'

'Wonderful record of ordinary folks lives - inspirational, wonderful display'
